Do Negative Thoughts Affect Physical Health?

The Mind Loops Blog – May 2024

Our bodies are unbelievably intelligent. They perform millions of tasks every day without our conscious control.

The field of epigenetics tells us that the health of your body’s cells take their cues not only from their DNA, but also from their environment.

What is meant by “environment“?

  • Inside your body: The types of food you eat, whether toxins like heavy metals or mold are present, whether you are hydrated, whether the body gets exercise and sunlight;
  • Outside your body: Environments that are peaceful and safe, vs stressful. Even a cluttered home can cause tremendous stress on the body and brain. Many studies have shown the link between clutter and physical tension, anxiety, poor focus, and memory.
  • Your thoughts and emotions: Negative thoughts not only lower immune function, they can lead to chronic stress – and chronic stress releases stress hormones like cortisol. These hormones affect cells on an epigenetic level by altering gene expression, and potentially causing health problems over time.

And we’re not talking about tiny health problems. Studies show that negative thinking can contribute to heart disease, cancer, and arthritis, among others.

The Power Of Your Beliefs

Many of our thoughts and beliefs are limiting and contracting, and thus detrimental not only to our
happiness, but to our bodies.

These include unkind thoughts you may say to yourself about your body and appearance:

Ugh, I’m so fat!
I look so old!

Look at those ugly bags!
My arms are flapping in the wind!

The same is true for negative thoughts and beliefs about other aspects of your sweet self:

I don’t have enough talent – so I’ll dump the whole dream.
I’m just not that bright. Never have been.
I always mess up.
What an idiot I am!

A Powerful Practice

One of the most powerful things you can do is examine your beliefs.

Are they truly true? As in, 100% true?

Or have you been thinking them for so long that you assume they’re true? Which – or whose – lens are you viewing yourself through?

The problem is, it can be difficult to uncover old, programmed beliefs that are affecting the body.

One of the best ways to uncover these beliefs, is first: Notice which area of your body is having trouble:

Poor eyesight? Painful knees? Wrinkles between the eyebrows? Gynecological issues? Corns or bunions on your feet? Constipation?

The best way I have found to get an answer to this, is to tune into the body itself and ask it.

I realize this may sound strange to some, and it isn’t easy for everyone; some people are more sensitively attuned to their body which makes it easier. But the body is ready and willing to talk. It may just require a little practice on your part.

  • Sit quietly with your eyes closed. Take a few deep breaths to settle down.
  • Put all your thoughts and worries on the back burner for a minute, and tune into what the inner body feels like. You may feel tingles or vibrations of energy moving throughout your whole body. You may not feel anything; but do your best to tune in.
  • Focus on one area of your body that is having issues. Place all your attention there.
  • Send that area affection and gratitude for all it does for you. Let it know you are there to listen, and if possible, to help it feel better.
  • Then ask that part of your body:
  • Wait, relax, and listen.
  • You may receive a thought (often very wise). Or an image. Or a memory. Or an emotion. Or tingles going up your spine, which is energy moving – and feels wonderful!
  • The first answer you receive is (almost always) the accurate one.
  • Ask more questions if you choose; when complete, thank your body for speaking with you.

If You Don’t “Hear” or Experience An Answer

No worries! Keep your eyes, ears and body open to answers that may appear in other ways:

Dreams, song lyrics, “Aha’s”, books, YouTube videos that appear in your feed, and if you journal,
there’s a good chance a clue or even a clear answer will appear there.

We lead very busy lives that distract us from the wisdom that may want to come through. Leave extra time for this wisdom to enter. Go on a walk or solo hike, or a relaxing drive by yourself; meditate; or spend those precious minutes before sleep asking your body to communicate with you.

Reprogramming the Belief

When you uncover a limiting belief that is stored in the body, it can help tremendously to do EFT Tapping on the belief to help shift it. There are many Tapping practitioners on youtube that can help you with this. I personally find Brad Yates to have lovely, calm energy, plus deep insight that really helps transform these beliefs.

Your extraordinary body is brilliant beyond imagination. Remember it is like a pet in the sense that it
doesn’t speak your same language. It’s doing its best to communicate with you.

Listen, and lead it with love.

Love,
Barbara
