Remember that old, holiday, claymation version of The Little Drummer Boy they used to air on TV “back in the olden days”?
I LOVED it. Never failed to give my heart a gamma burst, and moisten my eyes.
(yeah, I’m a sucker for sweet stories and dancing donkeys).
The message I love(d) so much is:
The boy didn’t give the Christ baby his DRUM. The gift he gave was his TALENT.
It wasn’t the THING. It was the love that came through the music he CREATED.
You, me, everyone has a special gift to offer. And not just as a gift once a year, but as an offering to this world.
Sometimes it can be hard to notice what our gift IS – because we’re so good at it, it feels as easy as breathing.
If you’re one of the people who keeps wondering, “What the heck IS my gift, my PURPOSE??”
Look at what you’re good at – to the point where it’s so easy you don’t even see what the fuss is all about.
Also look at what you love to do. Those are your two compass pointers to find your gift(s).
Our gifts and purpose(s) may change over time. Mine certainly has – many times! Follow your heart, curiosity, passion… and the BREADCRUMBS that the Universe puts in your path.
Some years ago, those breadcrumbs and curiosity led me to start singing. Which put me on all sorts of adventures!
Recording two albums… Touring with Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam (and finding a heartfelt friendship)… Fantastic gigs with massively talented musicians… Meeting unique peeps like Harrison Ford and Dale Chihuly… Connections with tons of beautiful people who came to hear the music…
…and yes, lots and lots of embarrassing life lessons along the way.
I feel grateful beyond measure for ALL of those experiences.
(even the stupid “lessons” – grrr!) 😉
